Located in the heart of Troyes history district, at the foot of the
cathedral and the former bishop's mansion, this half-timbered dwelling
has foundations dating back to the 12th century. It once belonged to the
Knights Templar of the Order of Malta, and it has been known throughout
it's history as the Maison de Rhodes.
It also served as a convent and later as the residence of the cathedral's
clerical staff. The part of the grounds now known as the church garden was
once the cemetery of Saint-Denis church, which is no longer in existence.
The Maison de Rhodes was purchased in 1998, but it took 3 years of preparation
and 2 years of the restoration before the hotel opened it's door. It now offers
11 rooms in 800 sq. m. of space. The hotel looks out on a medieval garden and
has an interior courtyard paved with cobblestones.
Everything has been restored. The timbering was dismantled, foundations consolidated,
woodwork taken down, the courtyard repaved, roofs redone in their original style.
Tiling from the period was used for both roofs and floors, and flagstones were taken
up and used again.
invigorating architectural surroundings with interior courtyard and large garden.
The rooms at Maison Rhodes with whitewashing brown beams, ancient red tiling, burgundy
stone floors, and woodwork give the entire building a soft sobriety with 17th century
feel. Also with invigorating architectural surroundings with an interior courtyard and
large garden.
