The nearby 13th Century
market town of Estoi is the 'real' Algarve in every sense of
the word. It is an area steeped in history. Apart from the
church and local market, there is the impressive Palace of
Estoi built in classic French style with its formal park and
gardens. Close to the Palace are the early Roman ruins and
Christian remains of Milreu and a third century Christian
Church, believed to be one of the earliest in the world.
For those wanting to venture
further, discover the picturesque fishing village of Cacela
Velha or travel along the Valley of the magnificent
Guardiana river to Alcountim. There is even a helipad in the
grounds, where you can arrange your own tailos-made
helicopter tours to discover the inland mountain Serras or
to the coast with the nearby islands of Culatra and farol.
In total contrast, Estoi becomes the centre for one of the
largest markets in the Algarve on the second Sunday of every
month. Here you will see tourists and locals alike bartering
to buy everything from traditional cataplana copper pans to
superb leather goods.
Although Monte do Casal gives the impression of being in the
heart of the countryside, it is only 15 minutes away from
completely unspoilt beaches and the Moorish city of Faro.
The golden beaches stretch from the luxury resorts of Quinta
do Lago and Vale do Lobo as far as the eye can see. For
nature lovers, there is also the Ria Formosa Natural Park,
which has many rare species of birds, plants and wildlife.
It is not unusual to find people on horseback, trekking
through the Pine forest for a leisurely canter along the
golden sands.
The old walled quarter of Faro with its cobbled streets and
square surrounded by orange trees contains many buildings,
including the Cathedral and Museum.

Nearby, Vale do Lobo has two eighteen hole golf courses
which includes the famous par- three hole which stretches
