The interior of the GRAND HOTEL NATIONAL is a thing of beauty. The palatial hotel exudes culture and art both within and without. The shimmering corridors lined with paintings and exquisite objects call to mind the galleries of Paris and Florence. Lucerne ranks amongst the prettiest towns in the world and surprises the visitor with unexpected contrasts. Mighty peaks alternate with charm lake scenery, tranquil alleys lead to pulsing shopping streets, and the spectacular KKL culture and congress centre looks over Europe's oldest wooden bridge. A mosaic of art, culture, leisure activities and night life make this town a must-visit destination. Once you come, you’ll never want to leave.
The KKL culture and congress centre was designed by star architect Jean Nouvel and offers guided tours. Discover the distinctive architecture and aesthetics of the KKL.
The Chapel Bridge is Lucerne's most venerable landmark and is also, at 204 metres, Europe's longest roofed timber bridge. Halfway along the bridge is the octagonal Water Tower, Switzerland's most-photographed historical monument.
The Lion Monument was Switzerland's first preserved figurative monument. Carved out of the naturally occurring rock, it commemorates the heroism in 1792 of Swiss soldiers who died attempting to protect the Tuileries Palace in Paris.
The Glacier Garden adjacent to the Lion Monument shows what Lucerne must have looked like 20 million years ago. As a natural monument with park and museum, it is a haven of tranquillity.
The Musegg Towers: back in the 14th century the townspeople erected some of the nine watchtowers on the right-hand bank of the River Reuss. The Musegg Towers played a defensive role by allowing soldiers to see into the distant countryside surrounding the town.
Swiss Museum of Transport: all that moves! The museum focuses on the past, present and future of transportation and mobility – on water, on land and in the air. The premises incorporate the IMAX Cinema with its giant screen and 3D films.
The Rosengart Collection is the most recent of Lucerne's museums. It is hugely significant owing to its important collections of works by Paul Klee and Pablo Picasso.
Visitors wishing to discover Lucerne away from the throngs of tourists might like to do so with the help of an insider (Best Friends Shopping) and track down its many exclusive and unique stores and boutiques. There's no better way to shop.
Twice a week – on Tuesday and Saturday mornings – the town goes to market! A wonderful experience on both banks of the River Reuss.
Lucerne is richly endowed with inviting bars and restaurants, clubs and discotheques. The Casino is home to the atmospheric phrase "rien ne va plus". A Mediterranean ambience reigns along the Reuss Promenade – make it one of the places you visit!
Music, culture: the KKL culture and congress centre is primarily a classical music venue.
Cruises on Lake Lucerne: 20 boats, five of which are vintage paddle steamers, offer a wide range of excursions on Lake Lucerne, bringing you closer to the fascinating scenery. Why not combine a cruise with aerial cable cars or rack or funicular railways for a great day out?
Mount Pilatus: Lucerne's landmark mountain – a place shrouded in legend – is 2,132 metres tall. The top can be reached using the world's steepest rack railway. It has so much to offer visitors of all ages, including far-reaching views and Switzerland's longest summer tobogganing run and biggest rope park.
Mount Rigi: the "Queen of the Mountains" can be accessed by rack railway (from Vitznau or Goldau) or by aerial cable car from Weggis. This is a very special mountain, known for its amazing sunrises; it offers 100 km of footpaths and a Nordic Walking park, sheltered barbecue spots, children's playgrounds, sunny terraces and more.
Mount Titlis and Engelberg: the Titlis has Central Switzerland's highest accessible glacier. To reach the mountain and its Glacier Park you take the rotating Rotair aerial cable car. At 3,020 metres above sea level you have a mind-blowing panorama of the central Alps as well as some fabulous hiking routes.
Sporting activities: if cycling and mountain biking are your thing, the region offers countless short and long, flat and mountainous routes. As you like it: gentle pedalling to ambitious tours.
Golf: the region is a haven for golfing devotees. Die-hard fans as well as occasional players can choose from more than ten courses and driving ranges, all within 60 minutes' drive of the GRAND HOTEL NATIONAL.
Mount Pilatus: Lucerne's landmark mountain is accessible in winter via the aerial cableway from Kriens. One experience not to be missed is the 6 kilometre-long sledging run from Fräkmüntegg down to Kriens.
Mount Rigi: the "Queen of the Mountain" is well worth a visit in winter, too. The vast sea of clouds viewed from above is an experience in itself. It also boasts 35 km of groomed footpaths, four sledging runs, ski slopes and even an airboarding run – all for a perfect winter's day.
Mount Titlis and Engelberg: the Titlis boasts Central Switzerland's highest accessible glacier as well as the region's largest ski sports area. On the 12 kilometre-long run down the Titlis to Engelberg you descend no less than 2,000 metres in altitude. The Jochpass ski area takes you into the Bernese Oberland. Engelberg's sunny side is a little less challenging: the Brunni is ideal for beginners, families and relaxation.
The town of Lucerne also has much to recommend it in winter. Strolling and shopping in the winding lanes and alleys with their antique shops, gourmet boutiques and jewellery stores is always an attraction. Coffee shops, almost like those in Vienna, invite the visitor to tarry awhile for a tea or coffee. Museums, theatres and numerous events, not forgetting Lucerne's famous carnival, cater for culture-packed days.
With some one hundred events, LUCERNE FESTIVAL in Summer is the largest of this distinguished threesome. Every year since 2003 it has opened with a concert given by the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA, an elite ensemble conducted by Riccardo Chailly and composed of internationally renowned soloists, chamber musicians, music teachers and some fifty members of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra. The LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY, founded by Pierre Boulez in 2004, gives the festival its own educational institution for highly gifted young musicians, who are specially initiated into the performance of 20th and 21st century music. Besides cultivating the standard repertoire with the best performers the world has to offer, LUCERNE FESTIVAL is also deeply committed to modern music. Every summer it appoints one or two composers-in-residence and focuses on their music. It also appoints stellar artists who are actively involved in designing the festival's programmes and present their art in a wide range of contexts. Finally, each season is given over to a particular theme, which governs the programming policy.
The youngest of the three festivals is LUCERNE FESTIVAL at the Piano, held annually each November since 1998 and devoted exclusively to the art of piano playing. Classical pianists and famous jazzmen, new virtuosos and established masters, pianists, organists, and harpsichord players: all come to Lucerne for a week to fill the air with recitals, concerts and improvisations.
Founded in 1988, LUCERNE FESTIVAL at Easter spans ten days during Lent, up to and including Palm Sunday, and places an emphasis on sacred music.
