Originally a
stopping point on a Roman road,
is
nowadays a World Heritage City declared by
UNESCO, in view of its urban beauty,
monumental integrity, its
multicultural nature and as the final
destination of a thousand-year-old pilgrim
route. It all started at the beginning of the
9th century with the discovery of the Apostle
James’ tomb. From then on all of Europe started
walking towards Santiago, a holy city of
Christendom where the grace of plenary
absolution awaited them. A beautiful
Romanesque cathedral, monasteries, pilgrim
hospitals, numerous churches,
stately houses and squares, where time
stands still, awaits visitors from all over the
world, as well as well as the surprising
richness of its contemporary architecture,
designed by Eisenman, Hedjuk or Siza, and
Galicia’s largest area of parks and gardens. The
city’s treasures are exhibited in twelve
museums all interesting to visit. |
