Once Upon a Time… |

The actual building
dates back to 1892 when the remarkable German, Max Brand Meyer
had it built. He wished to call it the “Oasi Villa”, a romantic
vision of the site, being the last homestead before reaching the
“Deserto”. Dr. Brand Meyer immediately began construction work
of the large villa, at the same time improving the surrounding
area by planting fruit trees – in particular those of apple and
pear. The work was completed in 1896. The presence of this
German tycoon, named by the local inhabitants as “the blond
man”, contributed to the diffusion of the cultivation of apples
amongst the farmers in S.Agata. in fact he had many varieties
planted having them sent from Germany and also taught the local
farmers the various methods of cultivation. They, in turn, using
well-timed grafting techniques produced the so-called
“limongella” apple. In Villa Oasi “blonde Max” lived an intense
and romantic love story with Enrichetta a beautiful and charming
woman, also a foreigner, originating from Odessus. They
dedicated themselves to the land and their sentiments until
1921, when they decided to sell everything and move to their
house in Naples.
Today, the old “Villa Oasi” have been restored becoming a
splendid and elegant Relais named… |

ABOUT THE REGION (S.Agata
sui due Golfi) |
|
|
|
|
S.Agata sui due Golfi is so-named for its
particular geographical position. In fact the
village is situated near the top of a hill on
the peninsula where is possible to admire the
bays of Naples and Salerno. At a short distance
from the centre of S.Agata, “Il Deserto”. The “Deserto”,
does not only have one of the most beautiful
panoramas in the world, but is also steeped in
history and legend.
S.Agata sui due Golfi is a
beatiful small town located in the
hillside of Sorrento and Amalfi coast, between the two
gulfs of Naples and Salerno. Is a very quite and
peaceful area where people can enjoy and appreciate
their holiday.
Its mild, refreshing climate is due
to the sea breezes and the coolness of the chestnut
woods which surround it, making the hot summer days more
bearable and allowing a soothing nights sleep.
In the village there are shops of all types,
bars, caffes, and restaurants. To be visited in
the village, the Church from the XVI century,
has a late Renaissance structure and is famous
for its very precious altar, with fine and
elaborate inlaid works of mother-of-pearl,
lapis-lazuli, malachite and every type of
precious marble. The Monastery of " Il Deserto"
and its famous belvedere above the Gulfs of
Naples and Salerno made this site one of the
most celebrated in the Campania region. Gazing
out to sea one can see the majestic profile of
Mt. Vesuvius and, strewn at its feet, the
colourful streets of Naples. Apart from the main
village centre, there are another seventeen
villages which have developed from the ancient
hamlets and are still linked by an intricate
network of paths, mule tracks and lanes as well
as by the main roads. |
