The Alta Valtellina ski areas are
international renown: the Alpine Ski World Championships was held in
Bormio in 1985 and will be held here again in 2005. Male and female
World Cup competitions are held regularly.
Among its many ski pistes the most spectacular is "The Stelvio",
which is the location of these world events. Besides the many breath-taking
downhill slopes amongst the woods and gorges for alpine skiing,
there is a beautiful 7,5 Km-long "Alù" track on the outskirts of the
town for cross-country skiing. |

The thermal springs of Bormio and
their medicinal properties have been known since 1st century A.D.
and were referred to by Pliny the Elder in "Naturalis Historia. The
Old Baths are a fascinating testimony of antiquity of the thermal
springs and it is possible to immerse oneself in history while
discovering an ageless well-being of body and mind.
The water, which gushes from the rock at a temperature between 35°
and 40°, pertains to the group sulfate-alkaline and earthy mineral
waters. This water is recommended for metabolic disorders, uricemia,
diabetes, affections of the reproductive systems and results of
traumatic injury.
The physical well-being obtained from this benefical water along
with the relaxing swimming-pool, sauna and hydromassage is the
perfect tonic for a holiday dedicated to exercise and health. |

Summer in Bormio is also appreciated
for its charming scenery of ancient woods that undulate from one
valley to the other with rich green pastures part of the National
Stelvio Park. There are about 1200 km of singular named paths, all
clearly marked, which link up crevasses and winding mule-tracks,
green mountains, lakes and trout filled streams. The paths lead to
crosses, fortresses, mountain springs and well-equipped mountain
refuges. |
