Insider Tips

Lin, our Lady in Red, is not only Kempinski’s brand ambassador – but also a true expert providing a lot of tips for an individual time in the Austrian capital.

The “Naschmarkt” is familiar to most visitors – however it is still equally popular among the residents. Whether it is small bistros and restaurants offering food from all over the world, inspiration for own dishes or spices and ingredients – there are plenty of new impressions for all senses. It gets a little less turbulent at “Nationalbibliothek”: reading, research or just enjoying the silence – for the architecture alone, this building is worth a visit. For those who love museums, Lin recommends a visit to the Albertina with its changing exhibitions or the Natural History Museum. They are located directly next to the “Burggarten” attracting the Viennese and tourists alike. For individual shopping and extraordinary pieces, there is the seventh district – including Neubaugasse, Zollergasse, Kirchengasse or Burggasse. Small boutiques and shops provide exceptional souvenirs.

through Vienna

So much to see in Vienna ... The most comfortable way to explore the sights is a ride with the Fiaker, the traditional Viennese horse-drawn carriage. "Fiaker-Baron" Wolfgang Fasching and his carriage are positioned in front of our hotel, ready to show our guests Vienna. In the 45 or 60 minutes long drives, Fasching tells stories about the city and its sights and he also knows some anecdotes you just can’t find in any travel guide.

Kempinski The Spa is a journey inspired by the European cycle of the seasons. Drawing on the elemental wisdom of nature, our treatments both invoke and restore the body's natural equilibrium.

It is not a myth, but a fact that we are all unique. You may feel invigorated and alive in cold weather and perhaps feel sluggish and fatigued in hot climates, whilst another person might be just the opposite.

Inspired by Kempinski's origin, the distinctive European seasons central to the Kempinski The Spa philosophy invoke an understanding in most of us. While Winter generates thoughts of hibernation and recuperation, Spring may encourage ideas of blooming and growth.

Our philosophy lies in understanding your needs and unhesitatingly guiding you there. We are focused upon restoring the powerful effect of nature, either by adapting to the outside environment or by restoring inner balance. Kempinski The Spa uses the wisdom of plants, flowers and herbs in all of its treatments, whether it be Winter, Spring, Summer or Autumn.

The Spa environment is one of tranquillity and relaxation. Please respect the quiet and privacy of other guests. We kindly request that you refrain from using mobile phones and cameras. It is recommended that you leave valuables in your guest room safe. The Spa does not assume liability for any valuables.

Typically Viennese – casual, comfortable and traditionally on the outskirts of Vienna. “Heuriger” in Vienna is called the wine of the last year, as well as the restaurants where it is served. No matter your group size, everything is possible.

We recommend the Wieninger winery, with personal guidance from the owner Fritz Wieninger through the wine cellar and the pressing plant and finished with a wine tasting.

The centre of Palais Hansen’s banqueting area is the ballroom. With 281 sq m (3,024.7 sq ft), the ballroom is the largest function room of the hotel and is suitable for events with up to 265 attendants. Depending on the number of guests and the individual needs, the ballroom can be divided into two separate areas of 134 and 147 sq m (1,442.4 and 1,582.3 sq ft).

Also in the ballroom, the typical style of Palais Hansen is featured. There are historical elements, such as the pillars in the foyer and the chandeliers, while the furniture is modern and warmly coloured. On top, the ballroom is set in one of the former inner courtyards and has a glass ceiling allowing natural daylight into the room. However, it is possible to dim the room completely.

The whole banqueting area of Palais Hansen Kempinski is located in an autonomic area of the hotel and can be operated independently. As a result, the banqueting area can be entered both from the hotel and from a separate entrance.

For smooth operational handling, materials can be delivered to the ballroom directly and there is a goods elevator to provide the perfect infrastructure for events with an extensive setup. Lights can be controlled individually and two beamers and two screens allow simultaneous projections. Both a dance floor and a stage can be set up upon request.

Hansen is perfectly suitable for presentations, meetings and business breakfasts. Depending on the setup, there is enough space for up to 98 persons on 116 sq m (1,248.6 sq ft). According to your requirements, the room can be divided up into two different areas of 72 and 44 sq m (775 and 473.6 sq ft). There are three separate entrances.

All event locations at Palais Hansen are equipped with natural daylight. Hansen is especially light due to its large windows. The furniture is warmly coloured and there are comfortable armchairs and wooden tables. Vienna is different – and ranked among the top cities worldwide for quality of living. For centuries, Vienna was the imperial capital and residential city of the Hapsburg and has two UNESCO World Heritage sites: the historical city centre and Schönbrunn Palace. Beyond that, museums and art collections testify the impressive history of the city; classical composers like Mozart, Beethoven, Johann Strauss and Gustav Mahler highly influenced the Viennese art scene.

Moreover the Viennese waltz is known all over the world, a cultural highlight is the ball season in January and February with over 450 events.

A notable fact of local tradition is the coffee house culture. Coffee houses invite people to enjoy coffee and conversations or read the papers at their leisure. The food served consists mainly of snacks like pastries, cakes and cookies. The close vicinity to Hungary, Bohemia and Moravia influences the Viennese cuisine with dishes like strudel and palatschinken or goulash, potato dumplings and pork roasts.

Iconic “Käsekrainer”

Iconic “Käsekrainer”, the most popular Austrian sausage, is the signature dish at Palais Hansen Kempinski, and therefore, its culinary trademark.

Every Kempinski hotel offers a “signature dish” that gives a culinary idea of its destination. Typically Austrian, the “Käsekrainer” is the perfect choice for Palais Hansen. The tasty, slightly smoked and boiled sausage is considered one of Austria’s most important dishes and was introduced into the market around 1980. It is an adaptation of the Slovenian Krainer sausage and its name comes from the Krainer region.

In close collaboration with the family-run company Höllerschmid from nearby Kamptal, where the accent is put on regional quality and taste, the kitchen team sets a statement concerning regional quality. The cheese in the käsekrainer is an aged Austrian Emmentaler. The slightly smoked and boiled sausage is filled with roasted pork and the casings are all-natural and made from pork without the addition of any colouring products. For more than 40 years, Höllerschmid has been in the sausage business and has been well known in the agricultural region of Kamptal for decades, mainly because they use GMO-free and regional raw materials.

Enjoy the Viennese sausage in the classic way with mustard, horseradish, pepperoni and bread day or night. Do you desire to taste the signature dish?

There is no celebration without a cake! So Steffen Holle, Sous Chef Patisserie of Hotel Adlon Kempinski Berlin, has created the “Mondial” for Kempinski’s 120th anniversary. The creamy dessert forms an extraordinary combination of lemongrass and green tea with chocolate and a shot of Cuban rum. The French word “mondial” means “worldwide” - and the name of our exclusive dessert creation says it all. The “Mondial” takes you on a culinary journey to all parts of the world, where Kempinski is located: fine almonds from Europe, hearty chocolate from Africa, aromatic spices from Asia, exquisite pistachios from the Middle East and a touch of rum and tobacco in honour of our newest Kempinski hotel in Cuba are combined to create a unique taste experience. Convince yourself and try our jubilee dessert until the end of the year in our patisserie.

Homemade & fresh from the oven

Homemade and hot served: Our apple strudel. Several times a day, the classical Austrian dessert is baked in the patisserie for our guests - according to the secret recipe of the grandmother of our patissier Georg Hölbl. A bell rings when the apple strudel is presented in the lobby, fresh from the oven and still warm. As a side dish we offer a vanilla ice cream or vanilla sauce and powdered sugar.

If you are interested to know more about our apple strudel, you can attend our apple strudel baking class and get to know the special recipe of Head Patissier Georg Hölbl.

At the Palais Hansen Kempinski we serve one of the best and most famous apple strudel in the city. In our apple strudel baking class, Chef Patissier Georg Hölbl reveals his recipe for the perfect apple strudel, which he inherited from his grandmother. The class takes one and a half hours and takes place in the in-house patisserie. You will learn the technique of strudel dough pulling and Georg Hölbl reveals the secret of the fruity filling. We serve the apple strudel with ice cream or vanilla sauce and whipped cream. Therefore, while the strudel bakes in the oven, we prepare the delicious vanilla sauce together. After the class, you can enjoy the homemade strudel with a cup of coffee or tea in the cosy lobby lounge. Of course you will also get the recipe, so you can bake the strudel at home.

The apple strudel baking class takes place every first Saturday of the month.

Starts from 2:00 pm | Apple Strudel | Cold and Hot Drinks | EUR 48 per person

This is the only way you can know exactly what room types are available for the dates you want, an the best possible rate, because you are dealing directly with the hotel. Bear in mind that websites set up to give an automatic answer, work with allocated quotas given by the hotel, therefore when it appears there are no rooms available for the date you want, this is not necessarily true. Plus they charge the hotel a commission which is normally around 20% of the room rate.
