Gallipoli is situated on a small promontory formed
by two big symmetrical inlets joined together. Its
name derives from the greek and means "beautiful
town". And the town is beautiful indeed. From the
"Sierra dei Cappuccini" the town looms up in the
distance as you get closer and the white beacon, on
the island of S.Andrew, seems to come right out of
the sea.
White beaches and monuments make Gallipoli a place
that can't be missed.
It's particularly worth paying a visit to the
fortified castle with its roundish forepart, that
was put before the towers, in order to further
protect the castle from being assaulted, or the
several churches, such as the cathedral dedicated to
S.Agata, built at the end of the 17th century by a
certain Genuino. |
