La Posta Vecchia is a 17th century post station originally built to accommodate the visitors and tradesmen who in the old days journeyed to the neighboring Palo Castle which still rises magnificently over the Mediterranean.
This old post house (La Posta Vechia) ceased its activity as such around 1918, perhaps due to a fire damage. It belonged to the Odescalchi family (the owners of the Palo Castle) and in the early 1960’s Jean Paul Getty, a good friend of Prince Ladislao Odescalchi, rented the castle for his Italian residence and eventually convinced the Prince to sell him the Posta Vecchia. During Getty’s restoration of the Posta Vecchia the remains of two ancient Roman villas dating back to 2 B.C. were discovered beneath the foundations. The subterranean chambers and the objects found in them, are today in a small private underground museum which hotel guests are welcome to visit. La Posta Vecchia was converted into a luxury hotel in 1990. The sea view from some of the rooms as well as from the open terrace where meals are served during summer, is absolutely breathtaking! |
