Some places hold a very special type of fascination. Almost always they are places of indescribable beauty, because what ever words you choose will fail to convey the sensations aroused in you.
The Punta Tragara Hotel is one such jewel, standing as it does in a unique location overlooking the blue capri sea right at the legendary Faraglioni cliffs. This extraordinary and unique setting, together with the hotel’s striking architecture, a creation of the genius of Le Corbusier, can now be admired from recently refurbished splendour, thanks to which the hotel blends in with nature even more harmonically, respecting and enhancing the island’s uncontaminated beauty.
This is what we are proposing, a unique luxury place in Capri and daring design, sculpted out of the rock face, where no two rooms are the same and where nature reigns supreme in a natural setting where space has created a stronghold of incomparable beauty where emotions constantly surprise and delight.
It was known as the “Stracasa” (“Super-house”) because it was so much more than a humble abode. In 1920 the Lombardy-born engineer Emilio Errico Vismara chose spectacular Punta Tragara as the perfect spot to build a villa, perched high above the sea with views of the Faraglioni rock formations. The plans were drawn up by Le Corbusier, who described the villa as “a kind of architectural bloom, an extension of the rock, an offspring of the island, a plant-like phenomenon”.
It was only natural, then, that Villa Vismara should play a key role in history a few years later when it became home to the American command during the Second World War. Its eminent guests included General Dwight D. Eisenhower, General Mark Clark and Sir Winston Churchill.
Peace brought all the joie de vivre of the Dolce Vita to Capri, and in 1968 Count Goffredo Manfredi bought the villa as a holiday home, turning it into a hotel in 1973. Hotel Punta Tragara has enjoyed extraordinary growth ever since, reaching the pinnacle of hospitality on Capri as its five-star luxury status attests today.
It has always been about a sense of home, a form of elegance which listens to Capri’s voice and interprets it with a light, personal touch. The villa which is now our hotel was once home to my grandparents, Count and Countess Manfredi, who spent wonderful summers here in the company of friends, family and illustrious figures. More than just a holiday, it was a chance to refresh the body and mind surrounded by nature and warm affection. The same memories still inspire every marvellous season at Punta Tragara today.

The Isle of Capri, is one of the most popular destinations in Italy! Soaring upward from the sea, with sweeping views, whitewashed homes and villas, fragrant lemon trees, narrow winding lanes, and flower-filled courtyards.
Interesting places to visit are: The Bold Arch, what remains of a large grotto that penetrated the mountain, Villa Jovis - Mount Tiberio the most outstanding of all the Tiberian villas, the Gardens of Augustus only a few minutes walk from the Piazzetta, The Charterhouse of St. Giacomo whose foundations date back to 1371 and is believed that it was built on the remains of previous Roman buildings.
Touring the island is relatively simple. You dock at unremarkable Marina Grande, the port area. You can then take the funicular up the steep hill to the town of Capri above, where you'll find the major hotels, restaurants, cafes, and shops. From Capri, a short bus ride will deliver you to Anacapri, also perched at the top of the island near Monte Solaro and discover the magic and famous Blue Grotto that must not be missed.
The only other settlement you might want to visit is Marina Piccola, on the south side of the island, with the major beach. There are also beaches at Punta Carnea and Bagni di Tiberio.
