When we visited Hotel Bosone Palace in September of 1997, the owner offered to show us a new property which was ready to open but was only waiting for some government permits... The Relais Ducale, a four star hotel with only thirty rooms, that took three years to build it! This was because it is a building from the year 1100 which is now transformed into a hotel and according to Italian law, in a historic building like this, the structure can not be changed in any way, therefore, the rooms are all different in size and shape and some of them resemble caves under beautiful stone vaulted ceilings. The hotel is next to the Palazzo Ducale and has access to two streets in different city levels: the Via Ducale, where the Palazzo Ducale is, and the Via Gattapone which runs at a lower level, this is an advantage to the hotel guests, because in Gubbio the streets and city stairs are pretty steep; so if you stay in Hotel Relais Ducale, you can benefit from the hotel elevator to go out the door most convenient for your plans for the day.
