favourite activities in this region.
Parachuting is also possible at the small regional airport of
Pamiers-les Pujols (only a 15 minute drive away). At Les Monts
d’Olmes, enjoy the nearest winter skiing facilities (45 minute drive
away). For those who like a more extensive skiing area
visit Andorra (100 km from Mirepoix). |

ABOUT MIREPOIX |

Mirepoix
is 48 km south-southwest of Carcassonne, in the Ariège department (roughly
250 km west of Avignon and Arles). This medieval city lies in the
foothils of the Pyrenees, and has spectacular panoramic views of
these mountains. This is a sunny region of rolling countryside,
mountain streams, open pastures and woodland.
Mirepoix is known for it’s social
activities all year round. At Easter these activities kick off with
a Jazz Festival followed by Medieval festivities in July. Europe’s
largest Puppet Festival is in August and Fete de La Pomme in October.
The
Ariège department with it’s rich cultural and culinary history is
well known for it’s markets. Monday morning is market time in
Mirepoix, situated all around the village’s Cathedral St. Maurice.
The church is famous for possessing France’s largest nave.
If history interests you, there are many attractions to visit
including the town of Mas d’ Azil, the Prehistoric Park, the Grottos
of Niaux, Foix Castle, Camon’s Abbey or the Cathare Castles…
Montsegur and Roque Fixade being two of the most famous.
