In the very heart of Assisi, just a few metres from St. Clare's square, you see an ancient 14th century stone arch to your left with a massive wooden Franciscan door of the 18th century.

Just above the arch there is a shrine dating back to 1330 portraying Our Lady and Jesus, St. Francis, St. Clare and other two Saints, St. Biagio and St. John the Baptist, by the same painter who decorated St. Damiano cloister (another very important religious monument in Franciscan history).

This is the entrance to San Crispino Historical Mansion, the only historical residence in Assisi. Which has been the home of three different fraternities between the 14th and the 20th century: Fraternity of the Disciplined of Saint Maria Maggiore otherwise called Vescovado (14th- 18th century); Fraternity of S. Biagio (15th- 16th century); Fraternity of the Saints Crispino e Crispiniano (18th- 20th century).

Art and History

In the 14th century, ten Confraternities (Disciplinati o Flagellanti o Battuti) were active in Assisi: some of them were founded at the beginning of the century, others maybe at the end of the century.

This shows how the penitential movement, which started in Perugia in 1260 thanks to Brother Raniero Fasani, was particularly active in Assisi because of the presence of the Franciscan Friars in town. The oldest available document concerning the Confraternity of St. Maria del Vescovado is dated 1354 and can be found in the land register of the goods belonging to the churches of the entire territory of Assisi.

Domus Book Café

In an atmosphere that features art and good taste, the Domus Book Cafe, is characterized by the alternation of black and white reminiscent of the ancient Roman Domus.

The warm hospitality and pleasant soft music, wrapped in a relaxing atmosphere, it's ideal for reading books and enjoy the excellent products that Umbria has to offer.

The dishes that we prepare at the moment, are composed of selected local products with the intent to assure the highest quality.

Then wait ... for small events, live music evenings, but also to end a day of work, there is nothing better to be tempted by the flavors of Umbrian land in this dreamy ambiance.
