The Mansion

In the very heart of Assisi, just a few metres from St. Clare's square, you see an ancient 14th century stone arch to your left with a massive wooden Franciscan door of the 18th century. Just above the arch there is a shrine dating back to 1330 portraying Our Lady and Jesus, St. Francis, St. Clare and other two Saints, St. Biagio and St. John the Baptist, by the same painter who decorated St. Damiano cloister (another very important religious monument in Franciscan history).

Art & Culture

In all the medieval fraternities of Assisi the entrance to the house is dominated by a tabernacle, which only in some cases still preserves the original pictorial decoration, mostly depicting the Virgin and Child in Majesty accompanied by the patron saints of the association.

This custom, widespread throughout Christian Europe, draws inspiration from the painted or sculpted Majesties exposed to the doors of the churches or the walls, which in turn were based on the pagan custom of exposing simulacra of the gods above the city gates, as can be seen in the Porta Marzia of Perugia. Unfortunately, most of the external paintings were seriously damaged by direct exposure to atmospheric agents, or were detached and removed at the end of the nineteenth century, but an attentive visitor who walks through the streets of Assisi will find himself passing under a large number of tabernacles , which once marked the beginning or the arrival of processions.

The aedicule above the entrance of the ancient fraternity of S. Maria del Vescovado is among the best preserved in Assisi. The kiosk has a considerable 'strategic' importance, due to the position of the fraternity with respect to the road that enters the city through the Moiano gate, where one of the main routes connecting the centers of the Umbrian valley begins. Moreover, the fraternity was close to the sources of Moiano, where wool carders practiced their profession. The presence of s. Biagio with the comb of martyrdom in his hand in a recess of the niche alludes to non-casual bonds between the fraternity and the wool workers, who practiced their profession at these sources: an iron comb was the main tool used to card wool. Often these fraternities were direct emanations of trade associations.

The painting depicts the Virgin seated on a throne with the baby Jesus on her lap. The Bimbo is playing with a little bird, which symbolizes the soul.
On both sides of the throne, s. Francesco and s. Clare and at her feet the tiny portraits of the confreres, dressed in white.
