ABOUT ZERMATT |
|
Zermatt is located at the foot of the Matterhorn
in the Valais Alps in the south of Switzerland at an altitude of
1,600m. above sea-level. This idyllic mountain village at the foot of the
Matterhorn has developed into one of the biggest summer and
winter resorts, to a mountaineering Mecca. There are no motorised vehicles in Zermatt.
Besides electrically-powered cars and bicycles, the only form of
transport allowed is horse-drawn sleighs and carriages. You will find the best conditions here for a
restful and relaxing holiday.
The Matterhorn which is one of the most popular mountains in the
alps, can be reached from Zermatt. It is a classic peak, a
sharp, isolated rock pyramid with steep narrow ridges jutting
from surrounding glaciers. One of the most frequently
climbed mountains in the world, the Matterhorn's every ridge and
face have been scaled, and there are now fixed ropes, ladders,
and huts along the normal routes to the summit. However, the
climb requires a great deal of technical expertise
and it is advised that non experienced climbers should not
attempt an ascent of Matterhorn as their first mountain. |
