Within walking distance from the hotel, guests can visit the
Arc de Triomphe the world's largest triumphal arch.
Ordered by Napoleon to honour the Grande Armée, his invincible army,
in 1806,
this arch of triumph which stands at the top of the Champs Elysées
and magnificently crowns the hill from where nine other avenues
radiate, keeps the memory of all the dead killed in World War I
(1914/1918) with the grave of the unknown soldier
and a permanently burning flame of remembrance.
From the Arc de Triomphe, guests can walk down Les Champs Elysées,
originally nothing but fields, until Marie de
Medicis decided in 1616 to put up a long tree-lined pathway. Today
of the most famous streets in the world, with its cinemas, cafés,
and luxury specialty shops. This special status, made it the site of
much growth and activity. At the very heart of Paris, it is one of
the most symbolic places in the city, representative of its spirit
and glory. |
