Castiglion Fiorentino is located in an fertile and agricultural area dotted with farmhouses, cypress trees and religious temples, some of which are still in use today, and it is characterized by its rolling hills and terraced slopes, and the presence of olive groves which, over the years, have brought wealth to the area. Castiglion Fiorentino itself was once an inaccessible fortified bastion, and today maintains the typical characteristics of a medieval urban area, protected by the castle of Montecchio which sits above the town and looks down onto the city below.
The castle tower dates back to the Etruscan age; it stands out against the sky, while beneath its shadow life proceeds just has it has for centuries. In the square of the city hall the renaissance loggia, attributed to Vasari, with its 9 arches on stone pilasters, has preserved the emblems and coats of arms of a thriving aristocratic past.
A rich archeological museum houses traces of a past that has its roots in the Etruscan age. Castiglion Fiorentino has a considerable number of religious edifices, churches of different eras perfectly preserved and still frequented by the local population; impressive structures that manage to leave an impression on even the most distracted of visitors; places that are off the beaten track where the weary traveller can escape the tempo of modern day life. Castiglion Fiorentino is located a short distance from the other historic towns of Cortona and Arezzo.
