Cascais is a seaside resort town on the coast to the west of Lisbon. The former fishing village has become one of the principal tourist destinations in Portugal.
Due to its geographical location at the mouth of the Tagus river, it was an advanced protection post for the city of Lisbon. It was also an important port where ships would come into harbor until their next voyage. It is still a very active fishing port.
In the 19th century, when the royal family began to come there on holiday, Cascais became one of the popular destinations for the rich and famous. The ladies and lords of the time found it a very pleasant place to spend their "time-off".
As it is only a few miles from the capitol city, it is also a favorite among the residents of Lisbon. This charming town makes for a great weekend getaway from the fast pace of the city. The town of Cascais is indeed very beautiful.
