Lough Eske Castle

Donegal Town County Donegal - Ireland  County Donegal − Ireland

A castle has been located on the hotel site dating back as far as the 1400's. The current castle was built in the 1860's and was completely destroyed by fire in 1939. The castle, as a focal point of the hotel, has now been completely renovated and enhanced to create the Lough Eske Castle.

Solis Lough Eske castle is nestled within a 43 acre forest estate hugging the tranquil shores of Lough Eske and the panoramic backdrop of the Bluestack Mountain range of southwest Donegal. The original Castle has been transformed in to what will be Donegal's first five star Hotel & Spa. The hotel encompasses 96 Guest Rooms including a Presidential Suite and 15 luxurious suites. Specially commissioned art work adorns the walls throughout the hotel teasing the historic building in to the 21st century.

A large Ballroom with silk and taffeta curtains framing the beautifully restored sandstone windows blends harmoniously with the natural beauty outside and provides the ideal setting for a truly memorable and romantic wedding or the perfect solution to large business conferences. A further 4 meeting rooms of various sizes can accommodate intimate board meetings and corporate team building sessions, and there's a fully equipped business centre and private dining function rooms also available.

The pool and SPA building sits in the footprint of the original Glass House. An aqua green and gold mosaic colour theme flows through the pool and SPA areas which comprises 7 treatment rooms including 2 couples treatment rooms with jet bath and steam rooms; a fully equipped thermal suite consisting of an ice fountain, sauna, steam room circular showers, heated benches and an infinity pool ensuring all your wellness and indulgent relaxation needs are catered for. Our fitness centre offers a wide range of cardiovascular and strength training options as well as state-of-the-art-equipment. Cedars Restaurant will serve Contemporary Cuisine inspired by fresh local Irish produce with daily rotating menus focused on the freshest offerings of the season.

Tucked within the woodlands of Northwest Ireland, this lovingly restored castle-hotel blends its historic past with a dash of contemporary elegance. As the only five-star hotel in Donegal, Lough Eske Castle, a luxury Castle Hotel & Spa, offers exceptional accommodations set in a meticulously restored 17th century castle. Featuring just 96 guest rooms, two bars and a restaurant, conference and banqueting suites, and a luxuriant spa, this secluded hideaway beckons you to a rural retreat of exquisite style.

The allure of Lough Eske Castle lies in its contradictions. Despite its glass and stone façade, the hotel maintains a blend of casual, country-style comfort and modern luxury. Simply put, this award-winning castle-hotel offers a fresh perspective on castle living.

Our castle accommodation offerings in Ireland range from the contemporary style of our Garden Suites to the country charm of our Courtyard rooms - that were converted from stables - to the more traditional elegance of our Presidential Castle Suites - with private access to the castle tower.

These extra spacious open floor plan room accommodations measure between 84-91 sq m (approximately 900-1000 sq ft) in size and are accessed from outdoor entrances. The Garden Suites were created during the restoration of the castle in 2007, but still maintain the original castle walls. Located opposite Spa Solís, these rooms are perfect for romantic getaways.

Each Garden Suite features high-quality stone tiled floors, thick tufted rugs, bespoke oak furniture, a Spanish gas fire and basket, walk-in cedar wardrobe, four poster king size bed, and earthy neutral colours to reflect the natural surroundings and gardens outside.

The larger suites display a grand oak table and chairs, ideal for private dining occasions seating up to six guests.

The suite is decorated with bespoke furnishings, including a hand-crafted mahogany king four poster bed, period furniture, Irish-style velvet upholstered, easy chairs and table, formally dressed windows, and rich colours to reflect its historic essence.

This magnificent suite houses two ensuite bedrooms, a spacious drawing room with separating doors, and private access to the castle tower, totaling 181-sq m (approximately 2,000-sq ft). Period-style furniture decorates the suite as each bedroom features a hand-carved mahogany king four poster bed and traditional velvet upholstered easy chairs and tables. Formally dressed leaded windows, open fireplaces with natural stone hearths, deep-pile carpets, and stunning vistas of the surrounding grounds and woodlands grasp the historic essence of these castle hotel rooms.

Lough Eske, also referred to as Lough Eask, translates from Gaelic as “lake abounding in fish.” Try your hand at angling for brown trout, sea trout, and salmon during the May to September fishing season. A fishing license, permit fee, and hire of a two-man boat are required to fish on Lough Eske.

Bring us your fresh catch or allow us to supply you with a choice of trout, mackrel, or salmon as we teach you the process from the preparation to curing and smoking methods. Afterwards, you may enjoy a tasting of freshly you smoked salmon over a glass of chilled white wine.

The Eske fishery consists of the 5-km River Eske, the 900-acre Lough Eske, and its tributaries. The Lough and its tributaries are amongst the most picturesque in Donegal, set among the Blue Stack and Tawnawully Mountains. The fishery is noted for its spring salmon, sea trout, and char, and also operates as a productive brown trout fishery. The fishery has a run of spring salmon, grilse, and late salmon, and sea trout angling is at its best from late July, onwards.

Donegal is blessed with an extensive coastline and vast ocean that offer visiting anglers the opportunity to sample some of Ireland's best shore and deep sea fishing. Bordered by some of the cleanest and clearest seas in Europe, wide stretches of rugged, rocky coastline entice shore anglers to cast their line for that game-changing catch. Deep sea fishermen may maneuver the waters and seek the day's catch without having to break the bank.

The Oak Bar

This charming County Donegal bar is everything its name suggests- a tranquil getaway with stone floors, heavy leather couches, historical black and white photographs, and a relaxing ambience.

On the same level is the Oak Boardroom, a charming private dining room with private entrance that seats up to 14 meeting guests or 30 dinner guests. With large, stone fireplace, bay windows, and an alcove, it is the ideal setting for a small intimate drink before dinner.

The Oak Bar and Oak Boardroom are available for private hire.

Gallery Bar & Lobby Lunch

The Gallery Bar is a firm favourite of Donegal locals and guests alike. Perfect for meeting up for a pint of Guinness and glass of wine or an informal bite to eat from our Gastro menu, the Gallery Bar offers a classic list of cocktails, aperitifs, after-dinner drinks, Irish coffees, European wines, and a collection of over 90 fine whiskies.

Our creative brasserie menu has a more rustic approach on the food incorporating local produce and local artisans along the Wild Atlantic Way.

Please fill this form for individuals or for groups and you shall receive an answer written by a live person at Lough Eske Castle. This is the only way you can know exactly what room types are available for the dates you want, and the best possible rate, because you are dealing directly with the hotel.
Bear in mind that websites set up to give an automatic answer, work with allocated quotas given by the hotel, therefore when it appears there are no rooms available for the date you want, this is not necessarily true, because they never allocate ALL the rooms to third parties.
