St Georges Lycabettus Hotel
is located in a beautiful location , at he chic area of Kolonaki at the foot of Lycabettus Hill, the highest
point of Athens, from which you can get superb views of the city.
Lycabettus Hill is really a limestone rock reaching almost
1,000 feet into the once-crystalline Athenian sky. It is home to many
famous places including embassies, cafes and exclusive shops.
The main square of Kolonaki is a major meeting place for many Athenians, where people-watching is the main past-time.
Lycabettus Hill features a small church and an open-air
theatre with the rocks as a backdrop, where concerts and musicals take
place. There is a funicular at the bottom of the hill that
takes to the top, but there is also a road to drive up, and the sport type may also choose to walk up to the top of the hill. Whichever
method of transport you choose you are rewarded with a 360˚ view of the sprawling city below, especially on a clear day.
The area houses some good museums, including the Benaki Museum,
whose collection features, among others, Mycenaean jewelry, Greek costumes
and memorabilia from the Greek Revolution. The Goulandris Museum
of Cycladic and Ancient Greek Art is one of the
best museums in the city, and includes objects from the Cycladic
civilization, pre-Minoan Bronze Age, collections up to the Classical
period. The hotel is also located a 10-minute walk from Syntagma
Square which offers some of Athens' best shopping. The old town of Plaka
is also worth a visit, and of course The Acropolis and
Parthenon and the Royal Palace should not be missed.
Day trips to the ancient theatre of Epidavros in the Peloponnese, or
the nearby Saronic islands of Hydra, Poros and Aegina, can be arranged
through the hotel. |
