The therapeutic properties of the thermal water of Abano Terme are internationally renowned and acknowledged. The Centro Studi Termali Pietro D’Abano, a benchmark for international research, monitors and carries out ongoing studies on the beneficial properties of the thermal water of Abano.
Rainwater begins its transformation into thermal water in the basins of Monti Lessini (in the Pre-Alps) and then flows underground through limestone. This type of water belongs to the category of deep thermal water (2,500 – 3,000 metres underground). During its maturation, which takes 25-30 years, the water, under pressure, is heated to 180°C and enriched with mineral salts and dissolved gases up to a fixed residue of 5-6 grammes per litre. After running 80 kilometres, the water flows out at the Euganean Spas at a temperature of about 80°C. It is classified as hyper-thermal bromidic iodic salt water and it is unique in the world due to its properties.
Mud, used in therapies, is the element that enhances the beneficial properties of thermal water.
Mud comprises two components: clay, the basic element (from Lake Costa in Arquà Petrarca) and thermal water. The benefits of mud are largely associated with its high temperature (38° – 40°C) and the heat it releases. A positive influence also comes from its organic composition. In fact, when mud is left to mature for about 6 months in natural light and at a specific temperature, it produces a blue-green bio-film on the surface comprising single-cell micro-organisms and bio-materials that have beneficial properties for our body.

We decided not to transfer the maturation process of the mud to steel silos but to keep the traditional method of maturation intact, in tanks exposed to natural sunlight with constant running water in order not to alter the natural process of the formation of endemic cyanobacteria that colonize the surface of the mud.

The mud is applied directly on the skin at a temperature between 38°C and 42°C for a period ranging from 15 to 20 minutes. At the end of the application, after a hot shower, the client is immersed in the spa bath a temperature of 36° – 38°C for 8/15 minutes.

Therapeutic treatments: One of the most popular treatments is mud-bath therapy, which comprises four basic stages:

The bath takes between 10 and 15 minutes and creates a relaxing and vasodilatory effect in the body. The aim of the immersion is to boost the soothing effect of the previously applied clay.
Purification: at the end of the bath, the guest is helped to dry off, given a soft bathrobe to wear and then returns to his/her room or the relaxation area to rest. During this stage, the body perspires to eliminate toxins. The perspiration period lasts about 30 minutes.
At the end of the mud-bath therapy, a revulsive massage completes the daily treatment.
The application of mature mud, combined with thermal water baths, helps the body to release muscle tension and relax. It has analgesic and pain-relieving properties.
To obtain benefits from the application of mature mud, it is advisable to have cycles of 6-12 applications, on a daily basis. The thermal sessions begin at 5am, when the body is strong and rested, and end at 11am.
Respiratory diseases are treated, from 8.00 to 11:00am, with inhalation therapy using nebulized thermal water, endotubaric insufflation therapies, endonasal irrigation and aerosol therapy. The sessions, lasting 10 minutes, help to treat chronic inflammation of the upper and lower respiratory tract. Inhalation therapy is also suitable for children.

Hotel Terme Venezia is one of few hotels with a Thermal Steam Grotto created according to the traditional features of Roman thermal baths. The grotto, an example of a humid Turkish bath, allows you to enjoy all the benefits of thermal water taken directly from an underground well at a temperature of about 89°C. The water is then partly spread through the grotto, measuring 22 mt2, through holes in the wall, at an average room temperature of over 65°C.
It will be a purifying and soothing experience but you should not overdo it! 15 minutes is enough in the thermal steam grotto, since there will be quite a considerable loss of excess liquids and toxins.
