The delightful fishing
village of Brucoli rises over a charming canal port and dates back
to the Neolithic period, though it was at its splendid best during
the Middle Ages. It is overlooked by the Watch Tower and the
recently-restored Aragonese castle. Close to the coast, in the
middle of the Gisira hill, stands the Sanctuary of the Adonai
Madonna, built at the end of the 17th century on the site of a 2nd
century oratory.
Ideally located midway between Catania and Siracusa, just 30
kilometres from each, Brucoli offers an interesting base to the
traveller wishing to combine a stay at the seaside with the
possibility of reaching the splendid city of Siracusa within half an
hour, or visiting Sicily’s best-known attractions further afield
such as Ragusa Ibla, Noto, Piazza Armerina, Caltagirone, Mount
Etna’s national park and Taormina. |
