AN OASIS OF LUXURY WITHIN THE VALLEY OF THE TEMPLES
The only 5-star hotel situated within the Archaeological Park of the Valley of the Temples, which UNESCO has declared a World Heritage Site.
A magnificent residence of the end of the 18th century, it is at the same time a custodian of the classical traces that may be discovered almost everywhere, like in some treasure trove.
Situated 200 metres away from the Temple of Concordia, a true masterpiece of Doric art dating back to the 5th century B.C., Villa Athena is a place which transcends time and space, where nature art and beauty have been merging together for over 2,500 years in the presence of the gods.
Renamed the City of the Temples because of its numerous Doric temples and defined by Pindar as “the most beautiful town among mortals”, Agrigento is full of history and culture. It has one of the most important archaeological parks in the world and has been named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
It is the cradle of great writers (Pirandello, Sciascia, and Camilleri) and the land of ancient folk traditions (the Almond Blossom Festival and the Feast of Saint Calogero).
Agrigento is also an important sea resort, with an extensive sandy coastline.
The famous Scala dei Turchi and the Torre Salsa nature reserve are the greatest expression of its natural resources.
Events in Agrigento:
- Bread arches
- Feast of saint calogero
- Feast of the assumption
- The almond blossom festival
Valley of the Temples
Declared by UNESCO to be a World Heritage Site, the Valley of the Temples archaeological site is a unique place in which to lose yourself. Here you will be met by a timeless landscape, full of rarefied and mystic silence, which recalls the wondrous Peloponnese archaeological sites.
One thousand three hundred hectares of land where only age-old almond and olive trees grow, the natural guardians of the remains of ancient Akragas, one of the most important Greek colonies in Sicily, founded around 582 B.C.
Traces of this ancient splendour can still be seen in the sanctuaries, the necropolises, the agora and the temples, built mostly in the fifth century B.C., during the years of the democracy established by the philosopher Empedocles.

Apart from art and culture, Sicily is also rich in beautiful coastline. It has a sea of dazzling beauty and extraordinary beaches which are worth visiting, if only for one day.
Scala dei Turchi
It is said that the natural stairway of this cliff served as a landing point for the “Turks” during the Moor invasions of the sixteenth century.
Imagine a sea that stretches to infinity, whose colours vary from green to blue, and a rock face of blinding white stone that slopes down to the surface of the transparent water.
Lie down in this opaline scenario and sunbathe while enjoying an incomparable natural spectacle.
Torre salsa nature reserve:
A landscape which is unique in the world, where cliffs alternate with limestone rock covered in clay.
Through bushes and shrubs, you make your way to a beach with clear waters populated by fish and anemones, where you can dive and do snorkelling.
From here you can see Torre Salsa, which gives the name to the reserve. It is an ancient watchtower. The rocks form a path along the surface of the water, where fish dart around and shellfish find cover. Walking along the 6 km coastline is a beautiful experience.
You go through a spectacular landscape where cliffs of varying height alternate with dunes, deserted beaches and cultivated terraces.
At particular times of the year, it is possible to spot the famous turtles.

The garden of the villa blends into the landscape of almond and olive trees that surrounds the magnificent millennia-old temples; from here the Temples of Concordia and Juno can be seen on the La Terrazza degli Dei, with all the enchantment that this spiritually uplifting place can give.
The Terrace is therefore in homage to the gods who saw fit to give Villa Athena a show that is repeated every day and from where it is possible to exalt the enogastronomic flavours of the territory.
The restaurant is characterized by the presence of an ancient Greek cistern, which is perfectly visible thanks to the glass flooring and the lighting which reveals the still-existing ducts which brought the water to the cistern dug in the tufa rock, together with the building materials and lining.
In subsequent eras, this cistern was used by the Romans, who lined it with opus signinum, and also by Christians, who created a sepulchral niche inside it which is still visible today. Finally, at the start of the 20th century, it was used for a brief period as a granary.
The name "Ibla" is in homage to the writer Sergio Campailla for having dedicated his novel, "The Terrestrial Paradise", to Villa Athena. He called it “Villa Ibla” out of poetic licence. Today, the historical artistic prestige of the restaurant and the hotel is entrusted to the expertise of Salvatore Gambuzza, the multi-prize winning chef who proposes traditional dishes from the area reinterpreted in a modern way. Giovanni Grano, the Maitre d’Hotel, sees that the service is carried out with the respect and the attention of bygone days.
The patio of the ancient villa is a place which is loved both by guests and by those who know how to appreciate the sight of the eighteenth-century colonnade that surrounds the master room. Its unique atmosphere, enhanced by the bookcase and by jewels made from the famous corals of Sciacca, make it the ideal place where to savour cocktails carefully selected by our barman in exclusive surroundings.
