Maratea is one of Italy's most beautiful beach resorts, with miles and miles
of dense forests, clear water, pleasant beaches and caves.
The coast is studded with bathing establishments and public beaches and its
water has consistently been rated among the cleanest in Europe, thanks to
Municipality purification system. The seabed is rocky and drops off very
near the shore, making it ideal for snorkelling and diving. It's possible
swimming in many of the caves that line the rocky shores; rent a boat or
arrange to take one of the local fishing boats from the harbour to visit
some of them. As well, the coast is also the chain of eight square towers
strategically erected on headlands and high ground, as look-out posts and
defences against the raiding Saracens and corsairs. |
