Hotel Villa del Quar

Via Quar, 12 37020 Verona (Pedemonte) − Italy

ROMANTIC LUXURY HOTEL IN ITALY’S AMARONE WINE REGION

Why choose us?

Because Villa del Quar is a National Monument that is truly worth seeing. It is steeped in Italy’s cultural history and heritage which inspired me, the owner, an architect by profession, to restore this beautiful building paying minute attention to the use of ancient materials and antique furnishings that would perfectly complement the villa’s past. My primary intention was to recreate the atmosphere of the past in accordance with the philosophy of Carlo Scarpa, a world-renowned architect who was my teacher at the University of Architecture in Venice, which highlights the fascinating contrast between ancient and modern in historical buildings.

YOUR HOME AWAY FROM HOME

The hotel is well organised, spotlessly clean and beautifully perfumed throughout. The staff are attentive, discreet and professional. All the hotel’s furnishings have been painstakingly chosen to blend with their surroundings and achieve a winning combination between the old and the new.

Every detail has been tastefully selected to provide a sophisticated and classical atmosphere for our guests...

We are amongst the very few hotels in the world which has antique headboards throughout on which we used precious silks mixed with rich velvet fabrics to obtain a “shot” effect that reflects Paolo Veronese's pictorial tradition which adds great charm to every room.

Here you can enjoy a wonderfully intimaterelationship with the surrounding nature as is traditional for Venetian villas and the villas of the Roman era.

The gentle sounds of the country and the beautiful gardens in bloom will relax your mind and help you to find yourself.

It is a magical place that you will want to come back to time and time again.

We will make you feel so welcome and completely at home.

Our benefits:

  • A Wonderful microclimate with cooler temperatures in the evening coupled with the fresh breezes descending from the Lessini mountains
  • Noise level equal to a maximum of 30 decibels at night compared with 70/80 decibels in the city (here you can hear the sound of the clock ticking)
  • Significantly better air quality in the countryside thanks to the surrounding trees and vineyards.
  • The swimming pool is the perfect place in which to relax, either in the sun or under the shade of the nearby trees.
  • Walking in the Villa’s beautiful gardens provides further opportunities for relaxation and perhaps the enjoyment of tasting some of the ripened fruits from the trees. The same fresh fruit is offered to guests in the afternoon at the edge of the pool. The same fresh fruit that is served in the restaurant along with the Villa’s own or local vegetable production.
  • Breakfast, lunch and dinner can be enjoyed outdoors, surrounded by the famous vineyards of Valpolicella with a breath-taking view of the nearby hills.
  • Maximum comfort in all the bedrooms is ensured by the acoustic insulation in both the floors and ceilings, the doors and windows. Soft mattress covers with feather-light eiderdowns and quality cotton sheets will provide guests with a perfect night’s sleep.
  • Original furnishings with antiques, paintings and beautiful artwork combine to recreate the atmosphere of the past with carefully chosen colours and high-quality finishes.
  • As in the past, a cosmopolitan clientele chooses to stay at the villa for lunches, dinners, and music evidencing that little has changed over time, nothing new has been invented.
  • The hotel staff are discreet and professional and will always respect our guests’ desire for privacy whilst being readily available to assist with any requirements you may have.

History: The origins

Quar means fourth mile from the city of Verona. Along its ancient walls runs a Roman Imperial Way: Claudia Augusta (47th C.).

Originally it was a mansio (from the Latin manère that means staying) with shops on the ground floor, garden market, stables and rooms on the first floor. Maybe we can say one of the oldest hotels in the world!
It becomes a castle in the 13th century, during the “Scaligero” period; then it took the form of the current building between 1,500 and 1,600. The structure is completed by an Oratory of the second half of the eighteenth century. In the friezes of the sixteenth-century building, the Goddess Minerva is represented in the form of a warrior with a shield and the Aegis with the head of Gorgona or Medusa, which are both signs of protection of the house.

25° year of opening

Villa del Quar returns to be a hotel in 1993 following the philological restoration of the architect Leopoldo Montresor, who is also the current owner. We are an independent Italian hotel, we are not conditioned by international chains but we respect all international standards for a luxury hotel and when we can we go further. Everything reminds the atmosphere of a Venetian Villa, from fabrics to furnishings, to floor finishes (Venetian concrete flooring), to the colors of the walls (Venetian stucco and spatula wall design with polished lime). We are proudly members of the regional institute of the Venetian Villas. Villa del Quar is a national monument.

Wellness & Relaxation

THE POOL: IN THE COUNTRYSIDE AMONG THE VINEYARDS

An ideal swimming pool for a relaxing break in direct contact with nature, in the shade of vineyards with a flowered garden to act as a background; its clover design is unique. All our guests will have an umbrella, mattress beds and soft bath towels with the service of our bathing attendant. To our guests will also be offered fresh fruit during the day and also upon request they can order cocktails and refreshing drinks from the bar.

The pool is suitable for couples and non-numbered groups, we guarantee privacy and silence to all our guests, everyone is obliged to respect these simple rules. The four-leafed pool has a total size of 500 m² and a depth ranging from 1.10 to 3 meters.

THE GARDEN : THE TIDY NATURE

Simple but rich in flowers, scents, colors. Gazebo, large pool, fountain, jasmine bows, obelisk, big cast iron pots and olives, vines and fruit plants: A “Locus amoenus” far from the tensions and noise, protected by the ancient walls. The concept is to have near the buildings the organization of the paths with gravel and English lawns embellished with flowers, olive trees, palm trees, especially around the pool; everything slowly fades towards another order, the one of the vineyards, also organized and ordered.

There are blackbirds who know very well that they do not run any danger and they let people approach them; magpies, squirrels, a cuckoo and an owl. The jasmine bows mark the paths and delimit the organized spaces. 2 large cast iron pots, one white and one black are placed at the intersection of 2 lanes in a non-symmetrical position: ying and yang. 17th-century statues enrich the garden, together with terracotta pots, stones and a lapidarium with stones dated from 1100 to 1700. An obelisk is located in the garden to the east, glancing at its summit from the jasmine arc you can see on the eastern hillside a group of cypresses delimiting an ancient manuscript of Roman times.

Open to non-guests

The swimming pool is also open to people who do not stay in the hotel, who are staying in the area or passing through Verona and Valpolicella. One of the formulas that we offer is a pool day in combination with lunch in our Gazebo or dinner in the garden, subject to availability.

The cost is 30 euros per person, including all the aforementioned services, with a private changing room where customers can also leave their personal belongings safely.

The silence, the irradiation, the gentle breeze gives a fantastic sense of well-being: the ideal place to relax in the hot summer afternoons and this is one of the advantages of the countryside compared to the city .

WHY CHOOSE US

A UNIQUE LOCATION WITH THE COMFORT OF A 5 STAR HOTEL

If you are thinking of renting a Veneto Villa for a day with catering, the average cost is around 3,000/5,000 €. If you deduct this amount from our Exclusive Villa cost and divide the result for our 25 rooms and Suites, the result would be the price you would pay for hotels in Verona City just for one room, with the additional cost of travelling to the Villa del Quar.

All the communal rooms within this exclusive Villa (900 square meters) are exquisitely furnished unlike many of the Villas that are rented out with a catering service which are often furnished for the occasion and do not have staff who are available 24 hours a day.

In most rented villas, the music usually has to end at midnight, whilst at the Villa del Quar, there is no time limit provided the volume is reduced after midnight.

All the rooms at the Villa del Quar are fully air-conditioned throughout the summer and in winter, the rooms are centrally heated to ensure the warmth and comfort of our guests.

We always have an alternative plan in case of bad weather. We can accommodate up to 150 people inside the Villa as all the rooms are large and spacious. You may be tempted by a beautiful building with impressive architecture but it may not be lived in on a regular basis and thus lacks the tasteful furnishings and the excellent service that the Villa del Quar can offer for your special event. We can also offer you the security of knowing that your event will go ahead indoors or outdoors, whatever the weather.

WHAT WE CAN OFFER

Gourmet restaurant Arquade

The cuisine is Mediterranean paying particular attention to traditional products that are typical of the region. We can also change the menu at the last minute for a small number of people and we can offer special menus that are suitable for those who may have any food intolerance or allergies.
Everything is prepared on site in our kitchen, we do not rely on external catering.

The menu proposals range from € 125, including water and coffee, as well as suitable wines suggested by us (1 bottle per 3 people). Different choices of wine that you may suggest will be charged on a case by case basis. The menu begins with the aperitif.

The cost of a menu for children, consisting of a first and second course with cakes and drinks is 50 €.

THE CEREMONY: CIVIL WEDDING IN VERONA

At the Villa del Quar, in addition to the Marriage Service, it is possible to also organize the celebration of the wedding’s Civil Service. This can be presided over by the Mayor of the town of San Pietro in Cariano or by his delegates in the Villa’s hall which is known as the “Portico” and will provide an ideal setting that is fully air-conditioned for maximum comfort.

The large windows overlook the inner garden and the ancient walls of the Scaliger era (13th century). Inside, you will find tasteful antique furnishings, including a sixteenth-century tapestry, all of which contribute to the beauty of this magical and romantic setting.

The bride will approach the groom and the guests as she descends Juliet’s stairs, which lead directly into the hall in which the ceremony will be held. The cost for rental of the hall is 500€, but this will be waived if the whole Villa is reserved. There is an additional cost charged by the Municipality of around 600€.

THE VIA CLAUDIA AUGUSTA: ALONG THE ROAD OF ANCIENT ROMAN HISTORY

The Via Claudia Augusta’s construction was begun in the year 15 B.C. by Drusus, one of Augustus’s generals, during the military campaigns that led to the conquest of the territories of Rhaetia and Vindelicorum (today the western Tyrol and southern Germany).

It was expanded and finally finished in A.D. 47 by his son, the Emperor Claudius Augustus, from whom it took its name some time later.

The road linked the ports of the Adriatic near Venice (Altinum), near the Venetian Lagoon with Germany as far as the city of Augsburg near Monaco and from there to the Danube.

The most significant archaeological sources for quality and quantity are the milestones along the route. Among them, the cippus milestones of Rablà and Cesiomaggiore which were discovered in 1552 and 1786 respectively, are of great importance.

With regard to the Pianura Padana (the Po River Plane), we know, thanks to the testimony of the antique Roman document, Tabula Peutingeriana, that it linked Ostiglia, Verona and Trento.

The road passed alongside the ancient walls of the Villa del Quar. At that time, the area was called Arquadis and this was a Mansion with a post station with horses, shops on the ground level, stables, a market at the centre of the square with a lovely garden and on the first-floor, sleeping accommodation for the troops’ commanders and the court dignitaries.

As a post station, for health reasons, the horses that carried goods from Germany were changed over at this point. It was very important to replace them before entering the city in order to prevent the transmission of diseases to the people of Verona which could have resulted in the city falling into enemy hands.

VERONA: UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE

For us locals, Verona is the most beautiful city in the world (after Venice), an extraordinary place. It enjoys a special microclimate with mild temperatures both in summer and in winter.

The city is surrounded by hills, is on the River Adige and boasts thousands of years of history.  It has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The area in which Verona is located has been inhabited since the Neolithic period when there was probably a village in the southern part of St. Peter’s.

Verona was recognised as the second largest city in the Roman Empire.
The story that preceded the arrival of the Romans is both intriguing and fascinating.

The Romans turned to the Paleoveneti for help, since they believed they were consanguineous. This belief was the result of a legend about Antenor and the Venets; being amongst the few survivors of the Trojan War and who had been driven out of their lands. After a long journey to the upper Adriatic, they eventually arrived in the vast area which today is known as the Veneto region where the Euganeans had been hunted down. Cato himself states that the natives of Veneto are descended from the Trojans.

LAKE GARDA: ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS LAKES IN THE WORLD

Lake Garda is the largest Italian lake covering an area of about 370 square kilometres which encompasses 3 regions: Trentino, Lombardy and Veneto. It is only 20 kilometres from Villa del Quar.

This part of Italy enjoys a wonderful climate which enables olive trees and cypresses to grow with ease. It is a land of magnificent scenery, with the lush mountainsides soaring high up above the water. This region’s boundaries end towards the plains where you can find the gem off Sirmione, a peninsula where the famous Catullus built his villa in Roman times.

It is possible to travel around the lake’s perimeter in just one day.

THE VALPOLICELLA: THE LITTLE TUSCAN

  • Valpolicella is a range of valleys extending northwest from the city of Verona. Since ancient times, this famous landscape has been defined in the south by the River Adige to the Lessini Mountains in the north stretching right to the foothills of the Alps. It is distinguished by three geographically diverse areas, but is always recognizable for the beautiful gentle landscape which is due to a mild climate all year round but especially during the winter season: the more mountainous area bordering the Prealps, the hilly terraced areas of vineyards and the plains leading to the river Adige.
  • The whole area is favoured by excellent exposure to the sun so both the climate and vegetation are classified as Mediterranean, evidenced by the olive trees and cypresses that abound.

  • Thanks to its gentle climate, Valpolicella has always attracted settlers, as evidenced by recent archaeological finds that have revealed the presence of man with artefacts dating back 90,000 years. The discovery of a cave near Fumane, inhabited by Neanderthal man, is one of the three most important archaeological sites in the world.

  • Valpolicella also played a very important role for the Romans, becoming a designated centre for the allocation of land to former Roman centurions. Because of the soil type and the land’s exposure to so much southerly sunshine, the cultivation of vineyards started early in this part of Italy, making this area famous for its wine, as testified to by Cassiodorus the great Theoretician official.

  • Valpolicella is characterized by numerous watch-towers known as "colombare” which can be found all over the region and from which pigeons were used for communication (a medium learned from the Chinese) to quickly signal the sighting of enemy troops. This speed of communication allowed the local people to prepare an adequate defence against invaders.

Arquade Restaurant

ONE OF THE BEST GOURMET RESTAURANT OF VERONA

“Quar” actually refers to the four miles between the Villa and the city of Verona (which was the second largest city of the Roman Empire). Along its walls runs the imperial road named Claudia Augusta.

The building was started during the Roman Empire, originally as a “Mansio” (from the Latin “manere” meaning to stay). It then became a "Scaligero" Castle in the 12th century and is now recognised as a Venetian villa and national monument.

Our dishes pay tribute to our history, using recipes which date back to the time of Imperial Rome. Our philosophy is: "simple luxury" which means discreet, attentive and elegant service, amazing dishes for flavours and colours all perfectly matched with local wines. Because we want to give you an unforgettable experience.

The Arquade Restaurant is the most romantic dinner venue in Valpolicella and Verona, settled in the tranquillity of the countryside amongst the vineyards and enriched by a beautiful flower garden during the summer months. Upon arrival, you will be greeted warmly by our professional staff.

If you have never stayed with us before, you will be amazed by the delightful atmosphere and the elegance of the furnishings. During the spring and summer months, you can also dine outside in the garden enjoying the delights of our wonderful microclimate.

The Chef

Since the restaurant’s opening in 1993, several famous chefs have worked at our restaurant: Raffaele Liuzzi, Fulvio De Santa, Giuseppe Sestito and Bruno Barbieri. Now Alessandro Rocchio, a young, very promising and talented chef with a great talent for creating the perfect balance between flavours and colours in the presentation of his dishes is in charge of the Villa’s kitchens.

Our goal at the Arquade Restaurant is to surprise our guests with an original cuisine, envelop them with a sensation of well-being and delight them with our excellent customer service. This is not a show kitchen but a proper kitchen with the extraordinary ability to combine mouth-watering flavours, scents, colours and exceptional technique. Very few chefs possess all these gifts and we are sure you will be pleasantly surprised by the dishes that come to your table from our very special kitchen.

The dining areas

We can also provide very elegant spaces for refined dining and a more modern dining area. The atmosphere is magical both in the main salons of this Venetian villa and in the Glasshouse where you will be surrounded by tropical plants and flowers. The beautifully kept garden with its intoxicating scents and spectacular microclimate is the perfect setting on a beautiful summer evening. The "Gazebo" is the outdoor restaurant at the edge of the pool where you can enjoy lunch followed by an afternoon relaxing in the cool shade under a sun umbrella or under the trees.

The cuisine

All our dishes are made with seasonal fruits and vegetables. From Marcus Gavius Apicius, selected by our chef, Alessandro Rocchio, our Imperial Roman menu showcases dishes that will surprise you with their elegance and sophistication in conjunction with our wines which are labelled in Latin (Ausia, Satyrus and Sublitys).

This is the only way you can know exactly what room types are available for the dates you want, and the best possible rate, because you are dealing directly with the hotel.
Bear in mind that websites set up to give an automatic answer, work with allocated quotas given by the hotel, therefore when it appears there are no rooms available for the date you want, this is not necessarily true, because they never allocate ALL the rooms to third parties.
