The Villa Extramuros was built in Arraiolos, a small city north of Evora, the Capital of Alentejo, the largest province of Portugal well known for its unspoiled beautiful nature, historical treasures and quiet lifestyle (not forgetting a rich gastronomy).
We fell in love with this region and wanted to share our passion with visitors. We welcome you in a very contemporary villa, decorated with furniture and art from the 1950’s until today, and with a parisian twist.
To say it in one word, Villa Extramuros wishes to bring you off the trodden paths. The spaces opened to the guests include a breakfast room, a living-room with its fireplace, the lobby with a souvenir shop and information desk, the patio with its orange trees and basin, and 3 terraces on two floors with nice views on the nature.
And of course : the swimming-pool and its deck, shower and lounge area ; the gardens, olive fields and meadows. All inside spaces are non-smoking areas.

No dogs allowed, sorry. We share gates with the National Ecological Reserve and also temporarily host sheep herds on our grounds.

The Villa is opened all year long, except in January after the Holiday period and until early February. In 2019: closing on the 6th of January and re-opening on the 8th of February.
As an alternative to the buffets, we prepare a generous breakfast based on daily renewed dishes and «à la carte» orders. Fresh fruit juices, local or home-made pastries, house-made marmalades, locally produced honey and cheese, bread basket, cereals, eggs, various kinds of ham and cheeses, and of course, a selection of coffee, tea, or hot chocolate.
The breakfast is served between 8:30 and 11 AM, either on the private room terraces, or in the patio, or inside in the eating room, at your convenience.
There is no restaurant at Villa Extramuros. However, at lunchtime a selection of snacks and salads can be ordered, with prior notice in the morning. A picnic basket can also be prepared on request.
Dinners at the Villa require anticipated booking at reservation or at least the day before, and depend on availability. Our style : a gourmet mix of Portuguese, Mediterranean and French specialties, using the best of Alentejo’s generous products, including organic fruits and vegetables. Fresh and hot drinks are served all along the day until 10 PM.
The Villa Extramuros offers three double rooms and two superior double rooms, all of them located on the first floor (accessible by staircases) with panoramic views from their private patio. In addition, two junior suites were created and opened during Summer 2017 in our new “cabanons”, cubic cork bungalows located in our olive grove at short distance from the main villa.
All rooms are no smoking areas. Extra bed available on request (at booking) for children from 3 to 12 years old. Little bed for babies up to 3 years old. 1 per room max.
The Villa can also be fully privatized for a period, in the purpose of private family meetings or business events
- The 3 rooms only differ with their orientation and views.
- Each room has a separate dressing room and a bathroom in Estremoz marble with a shower and natural light from the roof.
- The total space is as large as 60m2, including a 24m2 private terrace.

- 2 of the rooms can be equipped with twin beds, with a communication door to a master bedroom (ideal for families).
- These 2 rooms benefits from a spectacular 250° view on the Arraiolos castle, village and countryside.
- They offer a total space of 80m2, with a 45m2 sleeping space (king-size bed with linen sheets), a dressing-room and a large bathroom with heating floor and, in one of the rooms, a rainshower space in Estremoz marble. Plus 40m2 of private open-air spaces opened to the South/West and to the North with a Castle view.

- The “Cabanons” are contemporary independent bungalows, located between olive trees and rocks in our grounds, at short distance from the main Villa (2 minutes walk). Full privacy and direct connection to the nature.
- Inside the cork cubic structure, the 50 m2 Junior Suite offers a bedroom with kingsize bed, a lounging area with a sofa/bed, a kitchenette for breakfast, a bathroom with walk-in shower opening on an outside patio, a large terrace with sun-beds and outdoor furniture.
- The Suites are equipped with a new generation air-conditioning system (cooling or heated floor and ceiling), a fan, a dressing with safe, a Marshall sound system (but no TV). The bathroom covered with local tiles offers towel heater, electronic smart toilet, large shower with AESOP amenities, hair-dryer…
- The decoration of the junior suites is “eco-pop”, with a mix of natural materials, local handicraft, furniture and art inspired by the 1960′s. Each Cabanon is designed with a dominant color : one red, one yellow.
- Breakfast is served directly in the Cabanon, with fresh bread delivered in the morning. Breakfast kitchenette is equipped with , microwave, minibar, tableware. Complimentary fruit, expresso machine and tea set
- A stay at Villa Extramuros allows the access to a park of 5 hectares of oaks and olive trees, where you can walk, run, chill-out, sleep, read, workout, have picnic, play, watch birds and other animals…
- The ground is surrounded only by meadows, olive fields, oak forests, ecologically protected, where sheep flocks grow. A paradise for rabbits and birds.
- The garden was kept as close as possible to nature, with just the addition of bushes and trees of local alentejan varieties
- In front of the villa, the orange & citrus orchard welcomes the guests.
- The swimming-pool is located west of the villa, overlooking olive trees and fields around, with sunny exposure all along the day, and a perfect spot for sundowners.
- A 15×6 m infinite pool where you really can swim, and also a small pool for children
- Chill-out area, on a vast deck with daybeds, sun chairs and umbrellas

- The Atlantic ocean and its sandy beaches are only 50mn far from the Villa by car.
- Our favorite place is the beautiful and still unspoiled Litoral Alentejano, south of Troia peninsula, west of Alcacer do Sal. But the little beaches of the Arrabida coast, close to Setubal, are worth seeing too. You can easily go there for lunch and come back to Arraiolos the same afternoon.
- The Algarve is 3h from Arraiolos
- Two days at least are necessary to visit the beautiful and unspoiled city of Evora, classified by the Unesco among World heritage sites since 1986
- Not to miss : the roman temple, the cathedral, the recently re-opened Evora Museum. But also the little streets of the acropolis inherited from the moors and now protecting Renaissance mansions and barocco churches.
- For good food lovers, we recommend the local farmer’s market ( every Saturday morning, praca 1er de Maio ) and the local convent pastry shops
- Visiting the city of Arraiolos, famous for its carpet industry and recently enriched with a contemporanean urban design, is a charming experience.
Not to miss:
- The 13th century castle, on the top of the hill, offering a breathtaking 360° view
- The Interpretative center for the Arraiolos carpet on the main square.
- The churches with beautiful azulejos: Convento Nossa Sra da Assuncao (pousada), Matriz, Igreja da Misericordia
- Stop for a drink or a lunch on its quiet squares and pedestrian streets. The local specialities are the « empada de galinha » and the finger-licking « pastel de toucinho»

By road
Leaving Lisbon (55 mn) - from the Vasco de Gama bridge, take the highway A12 then A2 and A6 to Evora/Spain. Exit at Montemor-Este/Arraiolos, then take national road N4 to Arraiolos direction Estremoz. On road N4 in Arraiolos, don’t enter the village but turn right and follow the signs “Evora / Zona industrial”, just before the bridge. After 500m and immediately after the first red light, turn right in a small country road amidst the olive trees, and follow the signs “Aldeia da Terra”. The Villa’s entrance is 200 m downward on the left side. Extramuros portal, where an olive tree welcomes you on the left side of the road.
Leaving Evora (15 mn) - take the road N114 to Arraiolos. Arrived at Ilhas village, after Arraiolos’s activity park, turn left at the red light, follow the way down to a triangular crossroad, and take left. After 100 m, turn right, then 300m down to the Villa Extramuros portal, marked with an olive tree on the left side of the road.
Leaving Spain (50 mn) & Estremoz (20 mn) - follow national road N4 until Arraiolos. Then exit at Arraiolos and follow signs to Evora. At Ilhas village, turn right after the first red light.
By train
From Lisbon Central station to Evora (4 train/day 2 hours). We can pick you up at Evora station, or arrange a taxi for you.
