ABOUT MARTINA
FRANCA |
 |
Martina Franca is a baroque city which dates back to the Xth century when
the inhabitants of Taranto and the refugees from the neighbouring countries
sought safe on the hills-of the table-land to escape the cruelty of the
Saracens and sheltered on the so-called "Monte di San Martino", where
they built the first huts and a Chapel dedicated to the Saint. It is set
on the top of a hill among swift and fertile hills which bound the Valley of
Itria, the fabulous valley of the "trulli". Is the highest place in
the table-land of the Murge, 431 meters above sea level. Nowadays is a
popular summer destination for tourists and holiday-makers thanks to its
fresh and salubrious air, to the extraordinary beauty of its landscape, the
artistic interest of the buildings as well as the kind hospitality
disposed by its inhabitants . To visitors the white hilly town shows a
double appearance: the old town where the peasants have been living for
centuries secluded, as to defend their own "civilization" and the new town
with modern services and facilities. The Palaces and Churches of Martina
Franca stand out among the white lime houses and the narrow streets, often
surmounted by small arches and wonderful wrought iron windowsills decorated
with flowers.
