Topping the rocky cliffs
that traces the shoreline, close to the end of its peninsula, 25km south
of Pompeii, Sorrento, the last town of significance on this side of the
bay, is a picturesque village which has drawn foreigners
from all over Europe for close on 200 years. It dates back to
Etruscan times when Italy's first major civilisation was formed and
began to spread across central Italy. Nowadays, the city is a bustling
and popular place to visit and the old quarter still retains some of its
original grid of narrow, roman roads. A bright, lively place that
retains its southern Italian roots. It is a perfect starting point
to explore the rugged peninsula (even parts of the Amalfi coast) and the
islands of the bay. |
