Throughout the centuries, the Island's strategic location, in a pivotal position near Waterford City, brought it historical fame playing a major role in the history of the region.

From the 6th century settlement of Monks to the Vikings in the 9th - 11th Centuries. Followed by Norman Invasion of 1170 were Maurice Fitzgerald became the potentate of the Island and the Fitzgerald family legacy lasted for over 800 years.

Steeped in Irish history, the site of Waterford Castle settled from ancient times, was ancestral home of the Fitzgerald Family for 800 years this enchanting Island surrounded by the River Suir, was fashioned by nature, sheltered and secure.

With the change of ownership in March 2015 the Castle has undergone an extensive refurbishment. The owner & his team are breathing new life into the resort, from creating Island walkways to restoring the 16th century Castle hotel, Waterford. They're also busy redecorating the 45 self catering lodges & the King's Channel Club house. While maintaining the Castle’s integrity from repointing the exterior stonework to refurbishments of the interior rooms, and adding new elements of luxuries.

The refurbishment encompasses the restoration of the priceless antiques to their previous glory, reupholstering the items of historic value and procuring new period décor, with each addition decided by the Castle as it dictates what it will allow into it’s great halls & rooms. Ongoing refurbishment & restoration are planned for the Island Resort with the restoration of the extensive farm buildings & a new spa opening in the near

Golf

For the ultimate golfing experience that will stay with you for a lifetime, Waterford Castle truly is an island dream! The unique Waterford Castle Hotel and Golf Club is Ireland’s only true island golf resort. Completely detached from the mainland yet ideally located for an Irish golfing vacation or exploring the many Irish golf courses nearby.

Designed by renowned former Ryder Cup player, Des Smyth, former Ryder Cup player, and opened in 1992, this 18-hole, par 72 championship golf course, complete with luxurious clubhouse utilizes the natural landscape of the Island.

The layout of the golf course reveals attractive rolling fairways and subtle contoured greens, which magnificently blend into the natural landscape. A number of man-made features further accentuate the Island’s beauty including four additional water features on the second, third, fourth and sixteenth hole, which are both aesthetically pleasing while providing golfers with added challenges! Munster Room Restaurant

The award winning Munster Room Restaurant at Waterford Castle Hotel & Golf Resort was awarded 2 AA Rosettes in 2001 and currently continues this elite standard further confirmed with multiple awards and as critically acclaimed in the 2015 Michelin Guide.

With its warm ambience, wonderful oak paneled walls, ornate ceiling, and further complemented by an extensive wine cellar and exciting seasonal menus.

Dining at Waterford Castle provides an opportunity to taste the best of traditional and contemporary Irish cuisine, under the direction of the newly appointed Head Chef Stan Cicon. Originally from Slovakia, Stan spent the last ten years in Ireland and trained at Waterford Castle. Stan held the position of Sous Chef at Waterford Castle and in 2015 moved to The Micheline Restaurant Chapter One, Dublin, for further experience. 2018 brings the return of Stan as Resort Head Chef, his artistic vision for the Resort and his dynamic team promise an exciting new chapter for Waterford Castle's cuisine.

King's Channel Clubhouse

Relax and enjoy the surroundings of the King's Channel Clubhouse, overlooking the first tee of our 18-hole championship golf course.

The Clubhouse offers an informal dining menu that caters for all tastes - from a light snack to a sumptuous evening meal.

The Clubhouse is also available for any event, catering from 20-140 guests.

From Cork N25

At first roundabout approaching Waterford City, take signs for Waterford Regional Hospital and Dunmore East. Continue for 6 miles until you arrive at Waterford Regional Hospital. At roundabout keep right, continue on this round for 1 miles passing 2 pedestrian lights, at the next traffic lights turn left. Continue on this road until you see the ferry crossing to the Island and Waterford Castle Golf Club.

From Dublin N9
Turn right, at the train station roundabout, on to bridge over the River Suir. Turn left at next lights on to the City quay, continue down the quay in the left-hand lane, past the Tower Hotel. At the lights immediately after the Tower Hotel turn left on to the Dunmore Road, continue past the park, and bear left at the college. At first mini roundabout turn left, continue through next two roundabouts passing the shopping centre on the right and the hospital on the left. Turn left after pedestrian crossing and continue on this road until you see the ferry crossing to the Island and Waterford Castle Golf Club.

From Rosslare & Wexford
Turn left, at the train station, on to the bridge over the River Suir. Continue with the directions as from Dublin.
