Widder Hotel is more than just a design hotel. It is the gem of the Swiss luxury hotel industry, just waiting for you to discover it. Seven hundred years of history are steeped within its walls. Today’s hotel is comprised of nine formerly distinct medieval houses. All the buildings have been carefully restored to ensure they retain their original character. Inside the luxury Widder hotel you will find a striking contrast between historic building features and some of the most prominent modern designs of the 20th century.
All of our 42 guest rooms and suites contain traces of a history stretching back over 700 years. Painted ceiling beams, ornate stone intarsia and antique furniture alongside modern design classics from the likes of Le Corbusier and Mies van der Rohe. And there’s even more art waiting for you right outside your door – our private collection is displayed throughout the house and features original works from Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg and Alberto Giacometti.
Just imagine who might have lived in your room hundreds of years ago... Over the years, these nine medieval townhouses have been home to gentry, merchants, artisans and heads of the local guilds, all of whom left their mark by building, living in, decorating and modifying their residences.
But to preserve these nine disparate historic houses while transforming them into a luxury modern hotel was a challenge – to which the well-known Swiss architect Tilla Theus had the answer. She has threaded the houses through with interconnecting passageways, creating gradual transitions where one house merges into the next. Chrome, steel and glass have been introduced to complement the old stone walls and wooden beams. Theus also selected a particular type of wood and a specific kind of stone for use in each house. This ambitious conversion took a decade and was completed in 1995. More than 1,000 conservation builders and designers were involved in helping to fuse these nine entities into a single hotel. Restoration in order to preserve; innovation where construction required. This proved the only way to maintain the physical substance and core layout of the buildings, and so to conserve their 700 year-old spirit. And what does the name ‘Widder’, or ‘ram’, have to do with all this? Quite simply, the name of the hotel refers to the ‘Zum Widder’ guild of butchers, based in nearby Widdergasse since 1401. In the Widder Hotel, there’s a new world to discover behind every door. Each suite has a different layout and all rooms are individually decorated. One suite may feature venerable oak beams, another an antique tiled stove, grisaille murals, delicate frescos or elegant stucco. But all our luxury accommodation shared among all these are high quality materials and a host of historical references.
On the medieval framework we have layered contemporary design, cutting-edge technology and unparalleled comfort: each bed is adjustable, the mattress can be varied from firm to soft, and pleasant light is provided by directional LED reading lamps. Movement-sensitive night-lights guide guests from bed to bathroom, and to find out what’s going on in the world during your morning ablutions, just glance in the mirror at the integrated TV. Each room is also equipped with a Nespresso machine, minibar, multimedia TV, wifi and telephone.

Boucherie, brasserie, bistro – AuGust embodies them all. The latest masterpiece in our culinary portfolio is also the only restaurant on historic Rennweg. The menu here showcases the finest meat and sausages. In an atmosphere of rustic chic, chef Daniel Käser prepares regional classics and makes even long-neglected parts of the animal thoroughly respectable. Where else nowadays in Zurich could you try boiled beef salad, tripe and brawn? This is a place where a taste for adventure is well rewarded. For everyone else, there are classics such as Leberkaese, home-made pâtés, terrines and pies. Delicacies from other countries, such as prosciutto culatello con cotenna from Italy’s Parma region, and on-trend novelties such as beef jerky with Swiss Alpine herbs complete the menu.
Sometimes the best things in life are also the simplest. A casual dinner with friends, comfort food that gives you a warm glow, a good wine to accompany lively conversation. These are the attractions of our simple tavern ‘Wirtschaft Zur Schtund’. Here the menu emphasises classic Swiss specialities at attractive prices: raclette and rösti, flammkuchen and fondue, draught beer and wine by the glass. All we’re waiting for is you!
