Tropical Gardens

A HOTEL IN A TROPICAL GARDEN

The garden of this 5 star resort in Spain is designed to create an Asian environment in a Mediterranean climate region. Over 200 different species of plants and trees have been planted, 80% of which are Asian in origin.

Our collection of rare trees includes Pinus Pentafila (a Bonsai almost 200 years old brought from Japan), Chorisia Speciosa (commonly known as Drunk Stick) and Yuccas Elephantipes (Elephant Foot) with a trunk perimeter of over a metre and a half. The hotel has other extraordinary tree species such as Lemia Indica (Jupiter Tree), Cercis Siliquastrum (Love Tree), Albizia Julibrissin (Constantinople Acacia), Strelitzia Augusta (White Bird of Paradise) and Phytolacca Dioica  (Ombu or Bellasombra). In addition to all these fascinating species there is also a variety of fruit trees such as the Myrobalan plum tree (Prunus Cerasifera) and Orange and Pomegranate trees. These are complemented by the magnificent collection of Bamboos (Phyllostachys): over 40 different varieties with black, yellow or green spotted canes, bambusas more than 9 metres tall and dwarf bamboos. The hotel garden is also home to an impressive variety of palm trees, with over 50 different species including Kentia Palms (Howea Fosteriana), large groups of Areca Palms (Dypsis lutescens) and numerous Queen Palms (Arecastrum Romanzoffianum). Another outstanding specimen is the huge Carob tree (Ceratonia Silicua), over 200 years old. Although this is not an Asian tree, it is of particular value as when the hotel's construction began the tree was practically dead, but two years after opening it has totally recovered and is now a specimen of great beauty.

To round off the Asian garden more than 150,000 shrubs have been planted, providing a huge variety of colour throughout the year, and many distinct aromas in the different areas of the garden. All this makes a visit to the garden resemble a trip to the Asian continent, and guests discover new surprises each time they visit this little piece of Asia in a Mediterranean setting.

The Asia Gardens Bonsai

ASIA GARDENS TROPICAL GARDENS

  • From Saitama Ken, in Japan, to the 5 star resort in Spain Asia Gardens:the hotel's Pinus Pentaphylla Macrobonsai comes from the Saitama Ken region,
    some 30 kilometres from Tokyo.

Agriculture used to be the main activity in this region, which has an age-old tradition of macrobonsai growing, and it was only after the Second World War that the area made the move to industrialisation. The Macrobonsai in the Hotel Asia Gardens was planted approximately 175 years ago by the Nakayama family on their estate, and for almost two centuries generation after generation have cultivated and carefully shaped it in accordance with the Japanese techniques and traditions.

On creating the hotel's landscaped gardens in 2007, it was decided that a tree should be planted as the hotel's emblem. After much searching for the perfect specimen, this spectacular Macrobonsai Pinus Pentaphylla was finally purchased.

The Macrobonsai tree's journey from Saitama Ken to Valencia took eight weeks and on arrival at the Port of Valencia it spent three months in the quarantine area, as required by European law, to ensure it was free from any pests or diseases contracted in its country of origin.

A change of soil substrate was needed to plant the Macrobonsai at the hotel, as these trees require a sandy soil which does not exist in the area. A high-capacity crane was used to place it in the same north-facing orientation as it had in its place of origin. Today, the Hotel Asia Gardens' Macrobonsai is flourishing in its new location.
