A secret garden in Aix-en-Provence

Le Pigonnet cultivates discretion, tucked away in a residential area, just a few minutes walk from Aix-en-Provence center. Practically nothing gives it away at the entrance – you need to go up the alley lined with plane trees to see the hotel, which feels like going back in time to a Provence of the past.

The old pigeon house and a few mullioned windows evoke the original 18th century foundations. Leaves crawl across the façade and the green shutters ooze timeless charm. A sculpture of Saint Peter holds the key to this garden of Eden, which is the hotel's most cherished treasure.

The hotel's history is linked to the revival of thermal baths at the beginning of the 20th century. Things sped up in 1924 when the Swellen family took over the property. For three generations they injected and fostered outstanding character perpetuated by Esprit de France today.

Le Pigonnet currently brings Aix locals and tourists from around the globe together via fine dining and music. Traditions and modern art de vivre are rolled into one, making the hotel an ideal base for touring the south. It is also a destination in itself. Relax to the sound of the water features and walk in Paul Cézanne's footsteps. No need to go far to escape as you explore the delightful sections one after another.

Petanque ground

Play pétanque, an extremely popular game which is practically an institution in the south of France! Test your bowling accuracy in the shade of the outdoor bar while making new friends!

The Team

Le Pigonnet belonged to the same family for three generations. The Swellens sparked the team spirit and hospitality culture which continues today. Staff soak up the gentle way of life inspired by the garden around the hotel and have been passing it on to guests for over 20 years.

Frédéric Boivent is the new General Manager who guarantees the quality hospitality today, after a career spent in France and the UK. Frédéric and his team will be with you from the moment you book until you leave to make sure your enjoyment is seamless.

3 questions to Frédéric Boivent, General Manager at Le Pigonnet

What first caught your eye at Le Pigonnet?
The extraordinary garden. It is a rare asset to have this so close to a town center, but above all it is a living painting, constantly changing. It triggers delight every time you see it - when you get here for the first time or get back from a day out. The fountains and sculptures illustrate Aix-en-Provence, a city of Art and water where culture rhyms with wellness.

How do you cultivate this gentle way of life every day?
Thanks to incredibly natural team work. The hotel belonged to the same family for generations and is now in the hands of a family group, which creates a sensation of belonging to a house we are proud of. We are fully aware we work in a privileged environment and we naturally share the joy the place brings us with our guests every day.

How would you describe the overall hospitality?
I would say attentive, warm and full of consideration.
