The only restaurant-with-rooms on St Stephen’s Green

Cliff Townhouse, Dublin – the only restaurant-with-rooms on St Stephen’s Green – has one of the most prestigious addresses in the capital. It occupies a late 17th-century house on the square’s north side, originally the home of the Earl of Shelburne.

Throughout the 18th century, the house was owned by a number of Ireland’s most prominent families, with John Pratt (Paymaster General), the Ormsbys and St Ledgers among them.

The St Ledgers kept the house until 1790, when it was sold to Thomas Leighton – a modest Ulster trader and shopkeeper who went on to make his fortune with the East India Company. Later knighted, he demolished the existing house and erected two new homes, numbers 22 and 23, selling the latter.

Number 22’s next significant incarnation occurred in 1884, when it became the headquarters of The Friendly Brothers of St Patrick for the county of Dublin Knot, making it the oldest private members club in Ireland. The organisation’s chief concern was to abolish duelling, a grave problem during the Ascendancy period.

Samuel Beckett spent some time writing here. In its more recent history, chef Richard Corrigan established Bentley’s restaurant at the townhouse in 2008. The O’Callaghan family took over the entire property in 2010.

Since 2010, CLIFF’s Executive Chef Martijn Kajuiter has been at the restaurant’s helm, with Sean Smith working as Head Chef. The nine individual guestrooms have been renovated to create a modern restaurant-with-rooms within this classically beautiful building. Cliff Townhouse is managed by Valerie Bracken, who instils the property with warm Irish hospitality.

From Dublin Airport: Driving time is around 20 to 40 minutes (depending on traffic), the distance just over eight miles. From the airport roundabout, take the second exit onto the M1 heading to áth Cliath/Dublin/M50. At the roundabout, take the second exit onto the M1 ramp to the M50. Merge onto the M1. Continue onto the M50 (a partial toll road) and onto East Wall Road. At the roundabout, take the second exit onto North Wall Quay. Continue onto Custom House Quay. Turn left onto the R105. Continue onto Moss Street. Turn left onto Townsend Street. Turn right onto Lombard Street East. Continue straight onto Westland Row/the N11, then turn left onto Lincoln Place. Take the first right onto Lower Merrion Street (signs for N81). Continue to follow the N11. Continue onto Ely Place, then turn right onto Hume Street before turning right on St Stephen’s Green. We are at number 22 on the north side.

From Dublin Port: Driving time is around 15 minutes (depending on traffic), the distance around 4.5 miles. Head west on North Wall Quay, then take a slight left onto East Wall Road. At the roundabout, take the second exit onto North Wall Quay. Continue onto Custom House Quay. Turn left onto the R105. Continue onto Moss Street. Turn left onto Townsend Street. Turn right onto Lombard Street East. Continue straight onto Westland Row/the N11, then turn left onto Lincoln Place. Take the first right onto Lower Merrion Street (signs for N81). Continue to follow the N11. Continue onto Ely Place, then turn right onto Hume Street before turning right on St Stephen’s Green. We are at number 22 on the north side.

From Dún Laoghaire Ferry Terminal: Head southwest on the N31 toward Queen's Road. Turn right onto Harbour Road. Keep on the N31, until you turn right onto Stillorgan Road, which is the N11. Continue to follow the N11, before turning right onto St Stephen's Green.

From Belfast: Driving time is around two hours (depending on traffic), the distance just over 100 miles. Take the A12 (signposted The West, Dublin, Craigavon) and then onto the M1 (signposted The West, Dublin, Craigavon). Leave the M1 at junction 7. At Sprucefield Roundabout take the second exit on to the A1 (signposted The West M1, The South). Continue on this road until you reach the border with the Republic of Ireland, when you continue forward onto the N1, followed by the M1 (signposted Dublin). Pick up our directions from Dublin Airport at this point, where you come off the M1 onto the M50. [internal link above]

From Cork: Driving time is around three hours (depending on traffic), the distance 150 miles. From Cork take the N8 (signposted Dublin, Rosslare) Continue on this road until you can join the M7 motorway (signposted Dublin). At the end of the motorway, continue forward onto the N7, which takes you into Dublin. Come off this road at the second exit of the Red Cow Roundabout, and onto the R110 (signposted City Centre). Continue onto Tyrconnell Road and then Grattan Crescent before bearing right onto Inchicore Road. At traffic signals, turn left onto Memorial Road then right again onto the N4 (signposted City Centre, Dublin Port). At Junction 63, continue on the N4 (signposted City Centre, Dublin Port) before turning right onto O'Connell Bridge (N11). Continue to follow the N11, before turning right onto St Stephen's Green.
